Abstract

Purpose. To study the effect of repeat external photon beam teletherapy for choroidai neovascularization in patients with age-related macular degeneration. Purpose. To study the effect of repeat external photon beam teletherapy for choroidai neovascularization in patients with age-related macular degeneration. Methods. Eighteen of 78 patients who received initial external photon beam teletherapy for choroidai neovascularization showed either progression of the choroidai neovascular complex or progression following initial involution and were offered repeat treatment. Initial dosimetry included a total of 1400 to 2100 cGy of 8 Mev photon beam energy delivered in 7 equal fractions. Subsequent treatments were given 6 months to 14 months following the initial treatment and included total doses of 1000 to 1500 cGy. Results. Seven of 18 patients who received repeat Teletherapy following initial treatment failure showed evidence of involution of their choroidai neovascular membrane based upon clinical and angiographie features. Visual acuity prior to repeat treatment ranged from 20/80 to counting fingers and final visual acuity at 3 months to 10 months was 20/60 to counting fingers. Conclusions. Patients with choroidai neovascualarization in ARMD who show progression following initial treatment with photon beam teletherapy may benefit from additional teletherapy.
