Abstract

The coordination geometry of manganese polychlorides has been studied for a long time because those ions can readily be prepared in three metal charge states (e.g., Mn(II), Mn(III), and Mn(IV)) and the coordination number and geometry of the resulting species can vary concomitantly. Moreover, whether the resulting species contain only chloride ligands, or waters as well, is very sensitive to the HCl concentration of the solution used and the mode of preparation, as demonstrated herein. We have isolated a number of these species, under controlled conditions, and determined their structures (some at more than one temperature), to test for thermally induced polymorphism and/or significant coordination sphere modifications, and the results are presented.
