Some of the relevant questions related to the involvement of the private sector in generating and transferring agricultural technology are whether the private sector should play a larger role in developing and transferring technology, if public research needs to concentrate on the crops and more difficult agroclimatic areas where private investment is less likely to occur, and how the public sector should account for private R&D activities when setting research priorities. The chapter examines the determinants of private-sector investments in agricultural R&D, and characterizes and, to the extent currently possible, quantifies private-sector research activities in less-developed countries. -from Authors
