Abstract

As a part of our larger research effort to develop artificial intelligence approaches to computer-aided design, the present investigation is aimed towards the development of knowledge-based aids for the design of mechanical systems. The applicability of a previously developed model for circuit design (used in the VEXED system) to mechanical design problems has been investigated. In addition, we have designed and implemented a computer program (DPMED) that designs primitive mechanical components such as gears and belts.
