Abstract

The propagation of 1-ps electrical pulses (1-THz bandwidth) on YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) coplanar transmission lines is reported. Input and propagated waveforms at a temperature of 12.5 K are shown, together with the propagated waveform on a gold stripline of identical dimensions on the same substrate, as a reference. The pulse on the YBCO line is slightly shorter than the one on the Au line, demonstrating the capabilities of YBCO lines for loss-free propagation even of terahertz-bandwidth pulses. The broadening from 1.3 to 2.3 ps is entirely accounted for by modal dispersion on the coplanar stripline due to the still relatively high dielectric constant of approx. 20. The transient response of YBCO transmission lines to 1-ps pulses with currents close to and above the critical current density is also shown and discussed.
