Quantum criticality in your car bumper

Abstract

An overview of the quantum phase transition phenomenon is presented. A material that is close to a classical phase transition senses thermal fluctuations that develop in the order parameter over successively larger regions. The transformations in a material's properties that are found to occur near a quantum phase transition are believed to be the result of quantum fluctuations in the underlying order parameter.
