N1 - Funding Information: Her PhD work in planning at Columbia University focused on industrial water pollution control and was funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Academy of Engineering. She credits a Barnard‐Columbia project on water resources for encouraging her interests in the environmental area and its intersection with social science. Funding Information: Her portfolio of interesting and important projects is ongoing. Rae is currently part of a five‐year NSF sustainability research network led by Arizona State University, which aims at integration of various aspects of risk including the intersection of extreme weather events and urban infrastructure. Rae was also a founding member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE) at the University of Southern California funded by the DHS. Prior to that, she directed the NSF‐funded ICIS partnering with Cornell, the University of Southern California, the Polytechnic Institute of New York. Two of the products of these partnerships are books that Rae coedited: (Routledge, 2004) and (Routledge, 2005), both of which emerged, in part, from NSF‐funded workshops. contained chapters by numerous authors for applications of information technology for communication and control in different infrastructure services, aptly termed “infrastructure's infrastructure.” The novel approach was bringing the environment, social and economic systems, organizations, and policy to the challenges posed by information technologies ranging from their emergence in both traditional systems and new infrastructures to support sustainability. , drawing upon the insights of a wide range of national and international scholars, focuses on how infrastructure technologies and social systems have coevolved. Infrastructures have faced many risks as they overcome vulnerabilities, to adjust to new demands in the context of sustainability and resilience.
