note = "Funding Information: I (Fern{\'a}ndez) met Anneli in 1986 as a student at the Courant Institute. At that time, Anneli had received a grant from the Ford Foundation for a project entitled “Language Linked Approaches to Mathematics”. She was looking for a graduate student to work on the project and I was fortunate to have obtained the position. I still remember my first impressions of her. She had a strong beautiful face to match her voice and a contagious determination and enthusiasm about her work. I also remember being intrigued by this woman who had meaningfully conjoined the disciplines of mathematics and education into a respected academic career. I was familiar with her gifted editorship of the NML and even had a favorite in the series: Numbers: Rational and Irrational by Ivan Niven (1961) . In the fall of 1999, this book's reach became even more evident to me when I used it to teach a course on numbers and numerical thinking to one of the most challenging student audiences of all — elementary school teachers. My teachers made no secret of their enthusiasm for this material — a remarkable tribute to both Niven's writing and Anneli's editorial skills. ",
