Abstract

Ning Quan, a Ph.D. student at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign; Jun Yin, a research fellow at Kuang-Chi Institute of Advanced Technology; and professors Szu Hui Ng and Loo Hay Lee of the National University of Singapore, have authored a research paper titled, 'Simulation Optimization via Kriging: A Sequential Search Using Expected Improvement with Computing Budget Constraints'. Their model captures the nonuniform variability the simulation's output and balances the exploitation of promising search regions with low variability against the exploration of riskier, less promising regions that might produce a better solution. In 'Node Generation and Capacity Reallocation in Open Jackson Networks,' Imry Rosenbaum, a Ph.D. student at Northwestern University, and professors Irad Ben-Gal and Un Yechiali of Tel-Aviv University propose a heuristic to reduce the response times in service networks, which is the equivalent of reducing their work-in-process inventory.
