Drawing Our Own Rules: Creative Rituals is a summer course I have taught for the past five years through the University of New Mexico at the retreatlike setting of the D. H. Lawrence Ranch in Taos. A combination of compelling assignments, readings, journal keeping, and videotapes has made this class a richly beneficial, if at times also unsettling, experience for everyone involved. In the course, we explore personal questions about the construction of identity, the importance of cultural memory, the use of metaphor to create meaning, and the nature of invention. And by engaging with significant experiences from their pasts through a series of exercises, the students address competing concerns in their artistic practice.
