Abstract

The service outage based capacity proposed in this paper combines the concepts of ergodic capacity and outage capacity for fading channels. Service outage based capacity determines the maximum expected rate subject to a constraint which ensures that a basic service rate is achieved most of the time. A near optimum power allocation is derived for M-parallel fading channels. For a range of system parameters, this near optimum power allocation is in fact optimum and achieves the service outage based capacity.
