Abstract
A digital simulation model of a tank irrigation system is used to quantify the effects of adopting various modernization scenarios available for improved water management. Out of ten different modernization scenarios considered, the scenario incorporating modifications to the sill level of the sluices, and in the conveyance efficiency with improved catchment, yields the greatest water savings when compared with the baseline conditions. The policy options therefore suggest that lining of the main canals is one of the modernization options which offers a fairly large scope. There is also potential for substantially augmenting the carrying capacity of the tank by desilting it.
