Single-particle energies and Elliott’s SU(3) model

Abstract

We address some properties of the quadrupole-quadrupole [Formula Presented] interaction in nuclear studies. We here consider how to restore SU(3) symmetry even though we use only coordinate and not momentum terms. Using the Hamiltonian [Formula Presented] with [Formula Presented] we find that only 2/3 of the single-particle splitting [Formula Presented] comes from the diagonal term of [Formula Presented]; the remaining 1/3 comes from the interaction of the valence nucleon with the core. The same is true in the [Formula Presented] shell.
