Solution properties of polystyrene-based helato-telechelic ionomers

Abstract

In connection with aggregation behavior, the authors studied both mono and di halato-telechelic ionomers in nonpolar solvent (toluene) in order to distinguish the effect of intra and intermolecular associations. Also, the effect of various organic counterions on aggregation behavior was studied. Typical polyelectrolyte behavior was observed by viscosity and light scattering experiments for halatotelechelic ionomers that had only one ionic group per chain in polar solvent (DMF). The comparison of aggregation behavior between mono and di halato-telechelic ionomers in nonpolar solvent (toluene) clearly showed the effect of intra- and inter molecular interactions. The di samples showed both intra and inter molecular interactions, while mono samples only showed inter molecular interactions. These results are useful in interpreting the viscosity results on more complex random ionomers.
