Abstract
"Stricken with good fortune" is how Diane Arbus once described her life as a daughter of privilege. In this article I attempt to read her work as a series of efforts to cross class lines and to cast off the shame of the rich and take herself and her spectator-viewers along with her into those places where she was not entitled to go as a girl.
