String field theory

Abstract

A gauge invariant field theory of the bosonic string is formulated following Siegel, Banks and Peskin, and Feigin and Fuks. The free field action is constructed from the Virasoro operators assuming only locality. The propagator is very regular at short distance. The natural jointing-splitting interaction is described abstractly and a method of construction is sketched. A way is conjectured of reformulating the theory to be independent of the vacuum geometry.
