Abstract
We report a study of the vibrational properties of Cu(001) and p(2×2)-S/Cu(001) using Medium Energy Ion Scattering (MEIS). These two surfaces have a simple geometric structure and we can therefore use MEIS to study their vibrational properties. We have found (as is usually the case) that the surface vibrational amplitudes of both surfaces are enhanced (by ∼ 80%). A detailed analysis of our data shows an unexpected anisotropy of the vibrational amplitude of clean Cu(001), in that the out-of-plane vibrational amplitude is 30% smaller than the in-plane vibrational amplitude. The anisotropy is removed upon formation of the p(2×2)-S/Cu(001) surface.
