Tests and analysis on the delamination fatigue growth in glass/epoxy composite plates

Abstract

In this study experimental and analytical results on mode dependence of delamination growth under cyclic compressive loads are presented. Analytical simulations and experimental tests on crossply Glass/Epoxy specimens were carried out. The effect of delamination position in the specimen and initial compressive strain are considered to determine the trends on mode mixity and energy release rates. A comparison in the fatigue delamination trends between Glass/Epoxy and Graphite/Epoxy is studied. The analysis is based on the initial post-buckling solution proposed by Kardomateas. This model does not impose any restrictive assumptions on the relative thickness of the delaminated and the base plates. The outcome of this study clearly indicates the effect of the applied strain, the initial delamination length, and the position of the delamination in the growth rate of the interlayer crack. Additionally, the trends obtained for the mode mixity, and the energy release rate versus the delamination growth are found to be similar in both materials.
