Abstract

The intravenous injection of OIII:B4 endotoxin rapidly produced a transient hypoferremia in 8-12 week old pathogen free chickens. This response was maximal after 12-16 hr, was dose dependent and was superimposed on a diurnal variation in the plasma iron level. Recovery was also rapid and may have been facilitated by the simultaneous increase in the activity of ceruloplasmin which is believed to promote the transference of iron from the reticuloendothelial and hepatic cells to the plasma.
