Funding Information: Following the ideas of Bansal and French \[1, 2\] very closely, we shall try to determine some of the properties of the excited states of nuclei whose configurations consist of holes in the lp shell and particles in the 2s-ld shell. We shall also consider the f! shell briefly. If we deal with ~nly particles in a given shell (no holes), we can expect considerable success by assuming that the particle-particle interaction is spin independent and isotopic spin independent. The supermultiplet theory and Elliott's SU(3) scheme are examples of this. It has been shown, however, by Bansal and French \[1, 2\], that it is a grave error to assume that the particle-hole interaction is independent of isotopic spin. If one examines the negative parity states of 160, which are either one particle-one hole or 3-particle-3 hole excitations, one sees immediately * This work was supported by the U. S.
