Abstract
Focuses on the urban system in the Arab nations and its integrative and development potential for the region. Such contemporary forces as labour and capital mobility, sudden oil wealth, and rapid population growth have combined to produce an urban hierarchy compatible with the area's potential development and integration. Nevertheless, the region remains largely underdeveloped and disintegrated with substantial imbalance among its constituent countries. The authors also discuss the implications for the role of planners. Comments by Debnath Mookherjee and Ron Paddison. -from Authors
