Thermal conductivity of geometrically frustrated, ferroelectric YMnO 3: Extraordinary spin-phonon interactions

Abstract

The thermal conductivity of the magnetically frustrated, ferroelectric YMnO3 was investigated. Single crystalline YMnO3 was grown using the floating method, and polycrystalline specimens were synthesized with the help of a standard solid-state reaction. Thermal conductivity k(T) was measured using steady state method and heat capacity was measured using a relaxational method. An isotropic suppression in the cooperative paramagnetic state was observed followed by a sudden increase upon magnetic ordering.
