Abstract

Examines by direct numerical integration the transient and rectified response of a flat bottomed barotropic ocean to a spatially localized oscillatory wind stress pattern. Relates the work to other studies on both the dynamics of deep motion in ocean circulation and time dependent wind forcing. Considers here periodic (doubly re-entrant) and closed basin geometries and studies how the induced circulation depends on the form of the mean quasi geostrophic contours. Discusses the forced primary wave field in terms of the radiation pattern of a time periodic areas function. (from authors' abstract)
